Tonight's the night!

Tonight is the first of my Double Door shows this month and I'm very excited to be involved in a bill peopled with extremely talented friends. opening is Wes Hollywood's newest project, tenniscourts. They write great pop tunes with a minor Mod influence. Then is La Scala featuring ex-members of Menthol and The Dirty Things. This is only their second show but you wouldn't know it judging from their polished Latin-tinged attack. Then we have Brad Peterson, who I've been doing shows with for years, but this is my first Double Door show with him. He's got a fantastically clear voice and an impeccably sense of songwriting. Rounding out the night is Rudy's band, The Midnight Shows. They should provide the perfect soundtrack to getting people in the mood to close out the club and move on to closer quarters.

Wow, the above reads like it was written by a publicist, doesn't it? The main difference? I love all four bands and mean every word of what I say!

Here, I like you so much, and want you to experience all of these bands so badly, I'm giving you two dollars off the price of admission! Click on the flier below, print out the full-sized version, and bring it to the door to get in on the cheap!

As if that wasn't reason enough, I'm also DJing the show! Oh, okay. Wait. Maybe that's not incentive. Well, don't hold it against the bands, they'll more than make up for any crap music I might play. (Only kidding ... it'll be a no cheese, all killer, no filler type of evening.)

__________

Weekly Reader.

And now, for some current events rocking the Tankboy offices.

  • Harold and Kumar shoot for a sequel. The whole original crew is in place so I honestly don't think they can go wrong. The first flick was one of the best comedies in recent history -- I'm dead serious about this -- and is one of those films I can watch over and over again without getting bored of the jokes. I'm not expecting as much from the sequel, but I still think it should bve pretty solid.

  • Photogal sent me this test, full well knowing what an outcast I was in high school, letting one know just how cool they've become since those painful adolescent years of adjustment. I ended up with just the sort of result I expected. How will you do? Take the test here.

  • Holy shit! Red Kross! Frisbie! And Hushdrops?! That show this Saturday has DO NOT MISS written all over it. Whoa.

  • I saw Little Miss Sunshine yesterday and must say I enjoyed it. I know a lot of my friends didn't, but I think they saw it too close to the point that everyone was raving about it and expectations were raised beyond reality. Sometimes waiting to see a movie like that is the best thing, since you go into it with a more open mind and standards more relaxed than exacting.

  • Same goes for Lady In The Water, another movie I watched yesterday that I enjoyed far more than I expected. I think folks were waiting for too much of a "WHAM-O" moment, but I got more of a sense that the film was truly meant to be what it purported to be: it was a modern fairy tale, suitable for telling kids (or showing them) before bedtime. That sort of thing.

  • Living in Chicago, I can't wait for the Super Bowl to be over so things start getting back to normal. At least this guy has a sense of humor about it all.

  • Does anyone else remember the Weekly Reader, or is it just me? And did anyone else get super excited when we got to order books once a quarter? Oh, maybe it is just me.

  • We're giving away another pair of tickets to the Chicagoist CTRL-ALT-ROCK in a contest starting today, so go on over an sign up for your chance to win!

  • Finally, congratulations to my friends Eric and Danielle on the birth of their beautiful new baby girl! Of course they won't ever read this since any time they used to have available for web-surfing is gone for the next ten to twelve years, but I think they know how happy I am for them nonetheless!
